I had used a Fiio i1 lightning to headphone jack DAC/adapter for my iPhone. These fit the bill very nicely and at $9 I can easily afford to have several of them and won't cry if I lose one as you can pick them up just about anywhere including some vending machines in airports. I went through a phase over the past year of trying out various 3rd party DACs for a better listening experience for travel but found that the expense and hassle of using the camera adapter and an external DAC / HPA were not worth it for my use. Mostly I use them for listening to downloaded songs and movies on flights from both my iPhone 8 and iPad Pro. The Lightning port was first introduced with the iPhone 5 back in September 2012, replacing the 30-pin connector that had been used for charging on every previous iPhone and iPod but its inclusion didnt do away with the 3.5mm jack for your headphones entirely. ![]() I have a few of the adapters stashed in my backpack and keep a set in the case for my Alclair reference IEMs. I did a comparison on my old iPhone 6s and iPad Pro 10.5 and really could not hear a difference between the adapter and the straight headphone jack output. In addition to the DAC they also have an ADC for mic input so they are a pretty complex little device in their own right. I use the plain vanilla Apple Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter - hard to beat at $9.
